The Divine Spirit

A bold acrylic painting inspired by the sacred Bhoota Kola (Daiva Kola) tradition of Tulu Nadu, coastal Karnataka. Rendered in intense shades of red, orange, yellow, and black, the artwork captures the dramatic expression, ceremonial adornment, and powerful presence associated with the ritual performer.

The centuries-old tradition of Daiva worship is deeply rooted in the culture and spiritual life of the Tulu-speaking region of coastal Karnataka. Brought to wider popular attention through the film Kantara, the tradition represents a much deeper living heritage of ritual, faith, community, and the connection between people, nature, and the divine.

With its exaggerated expression, strong outlines, and fiery palette, The Spirit of Tulu Nadu offers a contemporary interpretation of this striking cultural tradition.
